The Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre is a vibrant, diverse, welcoming place where service users can meet new and old friends, join in fitness, educational, cultural/religious activities and workshops.

Hours of work will be 40 per week worked Monday to Friday with occasional evenings and weekends. The above hours of service are subjected to change in accordance with need of service users.

Jewish Care is attempting to change the way our services for people in community centres are presented.  An increasing sophisticated, mobile and diverse community within an ageing population has developed different expectations of their lifestyle as they get older.  It is apparent that our core services provide a level of personal care and key staff need to be more involved in providing this as part of enabling older people and current volunteers to fulfil their potential to engage in programmes and activities both within the campus and externally  This role forms a part of the strategy to redefine our work in this area in line with the vision for the Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre.  

This role has several elements and duties and you will therefore be expected to cover all aspects of the position including: 

 Transport

  • To work closely with the Day Services Recreational Support Assistance, Day Services programme coordinator and the Centre Manager to ensure the focus is on the personal care and wellbeing of the client group
  • To update the Transport list twice a day and make sure the buses are full at all times. 
  • To collect people from their homes, bring them to the Centre and return them to their homes with a door to door service, in accordance with the transport policy, allocated by the Day Services Recreational Support Assistance to agreed standards and to maintain accurate data.
  • To assist when required with the delivery of a Meals on Wheels Service to client homes
  • To carry out any other driving duties as required by the day services
  • To ensure the vehicles are maintained and checked to a high standard of cleanliness and road worthiness on a daily basis; and by weekly completion of a written report
  • To report to the Day Services Recreational Support Assistance when members do not come in, giving the reason for the cancellation or lost journey and update that information on Dynamic system.
  • To ensure that hazardous substances are used and stored according to health and safety requirements and to agreed standards to ensure any risk to members is at a minimum

Welcome days

  • To welcome new members to the centre adhering to the local policy with the aim of increased attendance and engagement

Outings Sunday social

  • To supervise and lead on outings and Sunday Socials when and where required to agreed standards

Daily activities

  • To promote, lead and help provide a creative and dynamic range of activities that successfully integrates users into the social life of the services provided to agreed standards
  • To work alongside Community support workers to ensure clients are ageing well through support and activity
  • To encourage current and future users to develop and achieve their interests by listening to members through social discussions with the aim of increased attendance and engagement
  • To ensure that members feel involved in the centre and remain as independent as possible.
  • To encourage and support the involvement of volunteers within the day to day programme of activity and care
  • To undertake key day to day service related administrative and financial duties to ensure the smooth running of the centre and recording information

Well-being and Dynamics

  • To share information with Day centre manager and Day Services recreational support assistance about the change in the well-being of members and update Dynamics system.
  •  To ensure the welfare of clients is delivered within a Jewish context to meet the requirements of our service users across the religious spectrum
  • To plan and monitor the well-being of our client group whilst respecting the diversity of the individual to agreed standards and enable us to review and evaluate the needs of the client
  • To participate and share in the provision of a caring environment for the Members by meeting their individual needs
  • To be responsible for day to day personal care tasks, completing relevant documentation and maintaining up-to-date filing systems in conjunction with the Day Services administrator and Day Services programme coordinator to agreed standards and to help maintain accurate data input records of activities and personal care.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills & Knowledge

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 in Care

Experience

  • Experience of community work
  • Experience of working with elderly, frail & disabled people
  • Experience of person centred care

Skills & Knowledge

  • Assist the service users in identifying other means of transport 
  • Fluent and articulate verbal communication
  • Clear, concise written communication                             
  • Understanding of confidentiality                              
  • Ability to work on own initiative and within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own workload
  • Ability to assess new and current service users in identifying appropriate support and care needs based on the personalisation agenda

Other requirements

  • Willingness to assist in the delivery of social activities for members
  • Working with staff/volunteers
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Clean UK licence, with Category D1
  • Able to be responsible for the cleanliness and road worthiness of a care bus
