This role is based at our Jack Gardner House resource in Golders Green, NW11.  The working  40 hours each .

The Home has a strong Jewish traditions and culture that offers accommodation for 15 young Jewish people age 18 plus who are recovering from serious and enduring mental health and require a supportive and therapeutic environment.  It is the policy of the home to empower its service users to live their own lives, enabling them to exercise choice and to maximise their independence while offering them the care and support that they need. This involves obtaining service users agreement in any proposal of plans and treatments and making sure that such agreements are fully recorded. Ensuring that they are involved in the running of the Home.

The role of the residential support worker is to ensure that all residents receive safe, supportive, and dedicated care within an environment that maximises their independence, dignity, choice, and maintains close links to the Jewish Community.

To promote residents’ choice, wellbeing, and protection through the ideals and values of Jewish Care, CQC Essential Standards of Quality & Safety and the HCPC Code of Practice for Social Care. Also, to comply with safe working practice as laid down in Health & Safety at Work Act.

The role holder should have experience and a good understanding of the nature of working with vulnerable adults with a variety of challenging mental health conditions. The home offers a 24-hour service, and the post holder is required to work flexibly as the work requires varying shifts.  Sleeping shifts staff are permitted to sleep during this period of duty and are expected to deal with untoward events and any emergency during the night. If staff are required to carry out waking night duty, they are not permitted to sleep during period of duty.

What you'll be doing:

• To ensure that all residents have an equal opportunity to enjoy a friendly, homely and stimulating atmosphere within the home, encouraging well-         being, individuality and independence

• To deliver person-centred care, and act as a key worker, to individual residents, to meet their personal, physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs and to contribute to the preparation of support plans and contingency plans, in consultation with staff, residents, family and their advocates, their updating and review by the care team, to be relevant to each individual resident’s needs

• To act as a key worker establishing programmes of care both for individuals and in groups settings to meet the needs of residents. To support residents in their personal care and work alongside to maintain their bedrooms and communal areas to an acceptable standard

• To ensure administrative duties are completed in accordance to the organisational standards aiming to achieve best possible practice, including the compilation and presentation of reports, assessments and monitoring of support plans, as well as attending reviews to organisational standards

• To remain alert and attentive to the needs of the residents throughout the shift, to ensure their requirements are met always, including responding effectively to all calls and alarms, responding to residents’ who may have sleeping issues throughout the night and providing emotional support and company by engaging with the resident concerned

• To coordinate and support colleagues (include volunteers) as and when required to ensure the needs of the home are met, including reflective handover, staff meetings and the smooth running of all shifts, day and night

• To work positively with a multi-cultural team, and to treat everyone with warmth and kindness, including consideration, compassion, and sensitivity towards all, ensuring that excellent care and good work practice is provided at all times.  

What you'll need:

  • QCF Level 3 in Health & Social Care, RGN, RMN, Psychology background
  • Experience of paid or voluntary work in mental health - minimum of 3 years essential
  • Experience in engaging and motivating clients with mental health issues in a similar environment, preferably in the residential section
  • Experience of administering medication, key working, formulation of support plans and carrying out risk assessments and personal care in a similar role, paid or voluntary
  • Experience of working with people with challenging or anti-social behaviour and willingness to colleagues in de-escalation techniques
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural diverse environment
  • Experience in leading a shift and being professional in all that is undertaken to achieve best practice
  • Experience in facilitating group activities or engaging with service users in 1:1 i.e. cookery group, recovery group, men /women’s group, IT skills, and current affairs. Also, Healthy eating coaching and looking at opportunities for employment and educational key clients
  • To be aware and demonstrate willingness to learn and adhere to the Mental Health Act, Safeguarding Adults, Equal Opportunities Awareness, Mental Capacity Act, DoLs, Health and Safety, Fire awareness protocol and the role of CQC in care homes
  • To ensure effective, open, and positive communication within the home, including to residents, their relatives, staff and volunteers, external professionals, and all visitors to the home, using the ‘Key Working’ system, all of which are required to be recorded and documented
This post is for a Qualified Residential Support Worker - Mental health working on a 40 hour week contract.
